With summertime’s arrival, my family is excited for backyard bbqs, hide-n-go seek at sunset, and roasting marshmallows by the fire. One of the pests in our way of a good time are the mosquitoes that arrive with the onset of warm summer weather. Thankfully, we are preventing any mosquito encounters by using Orkin for backyard Mosquito Control.
As long as it isn’t too hot, my daughters enjoy spending every minute outside in our backyard. We have a lot of greenery – plants, trees, bushes – and the girls play all around it. My husband and I set up a fire pit where we like to sit, watching our girls frolick during the golden hour. It’s beyond important that our yard is mosquito free so we can truly enjoy nature. Orkin will be coming out once a month this summer to help us with this!
Why should you worry about mosquitoes?
Did you know a mosquito bite can come with more than just an itch? Zika virus, chikungunya virus, and West Nile virus are just three of many dangerous diseases transmitted through a mosquito bite. It is scary to think either one of my little girls could contract a disease from a mosquito – so we would rather be safe than sorry!
We learned that while Orkin treatments are very effective at reducing mosquito populations, mosquitoes don’t respect property lines or fences. It’s important to talk to your neighbors and work together to eliminate conditions where mosquitoes can breed. Where do mosquitoes breed? Standing water! Dump out the kiddie pools and any other standing water around your home as mosquitoes need less than an inch of water to breed.
How does Orkin control mosquitoes in your backyard?
This summer we are controlling mosquitoes in our backyard with Orkin’s mosquito control service. Want to know how the Mosquito Control service works? First, the licensed pest professionals at Orkin design a custom treatment plan that fits your yard’s needs. My husband and I walked around our yard with the Orkin team to learn which areas would be sprayed and why.
Next, we went inside while the licensed pest professionals worked their magic! Orkin’s treatments are approved and regulated by the EPA, and the technicians are specially trained to use them. We were instructed to stay out of the yard for a few hours while the treatment settled. There wasn’t any type of odor in the air or residue on the ground afterwards – the yard looked exactly the same!
Our Orkin pest professional said it would take a few days before we noticed a decrease in the mosquito population. Now that it has been a few weeks since our first Orkin Mosquito Control Treatment, we can safely say the mosquitoes are gone!
What are other ways to protect yourself from mosquito bites?
Even though our yard is mosquito-free, we are still protecting ourselves from mosquito bites in other outdoor situations. A mosquito’s prime activity time is from dusk until dawn, so we use mosquito repellent. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the use of EPA-registered mosquito repellents containing DEET or picaridin. I highly recommend asking your Orkin pest professional for more tips too – they are so helpful!
We are excited for all of the memories we will make this summer in our mosquito free backyard. Thank you to Orkin for sponsoring this post!
