Are you looking for summer activities for kids? Here is a round-up of fun things to do on a rainy or sunny day in the summer!

How to have Fun on a Sunny or Rainy Day in the Summer
The start of summer feels magical—endless possibilities for fun and adventure seem to await. However, it doesn’t take long for boredom to set in, especially once the novelty wears off. In addition to short attention spans, unpredictable weather—like sudden rain or extreme heat—can throw a wrench into outdoor plans. That’s why it’s essential to be prepared with backup activities for summer fun.
In our house, it usually takes about two weeks before at least one child starts climbing the walls looking for something new to do! To ensure my children have plenty of options, I put together a round-up of the best summer activities for kids. I will do anything to avoid hearing, “I am bored!” before lunchtime.
Sunny Day Activities for Kids
Backyard Obstacle Course – Use cones, pool noodles, hula hoops, and chalk to build a DIY obstacle course that burns energy and sparks imagination.
Sidewalk Chalk Art Challenge – Draw prompts and let your kids create their own chalk masterpieces—bonus points for hopscotch or “draw your dream vacation” themes!
DIY Water Table Fun – Repurpose a storage bin into a water table with cups, spoons, sponges, and floating toys—instant entertainment on hot afternoons.
Scavenger Hunt Safari – Create a list of summer-themed objects for your kids to find around the yard. Add binoculars or magnifying glasses for explorer vibes.
Rainy Day Indoor Activities
Sensory Bin Station – Fill a container with rice, beans, or pasta and hide small toys inside for digging, scooping, and sorting fun. The Dollar Store has everything you could ever want to make a sensory bin.
Story Time Theater – Have your kids act out their favorite books or dress up in costumes for an indoor mini play—great for rainy day giggles.
Rainy Day Bingo – Make a simple bingo board with tasks like “build a tower,” “read a book,” or “dance party.” It’s structured fun with a goal!
Audio Book + Art Combo – Play a kid-friendly audiobook (visit the library or ask Alexa!) and let your children draw scenes from the story. It builds listening skills and creativity at once.
Supplies for Summer Activities can be found in your home or purchased anywhere – but I also put together an easy to shop list for your summer fun supplies.
